The East Gate Tower

The East Gate Tower is a famous landmark in Meinong, with a unique appearance. It was built as an internal structure in the East Fence by Hakka people who valued education in the hope that their descendants would prosper. It was rebuilt in imitation Qing style, with dragon eaves and a pheonix pavilion, and four large characters “Da Qi Wen Ming” (大啟文明 in Chinese), have been inscribed upon the gatehouse. Lying on the principal axis passing through the village, the gatehouse has borne witness to the development of Meinong, and Meinong River, below the gate, was where the women used to wash clothes.
